WHY I NO LONGER SUPPORT "BRAS FOR A CAUSE" AND OTHER EVENTS

Last night was the 4th annual "Bras for a Cause" gala at the Captains Inn in Forked River.  It was sponsored by the Ocean County Chapter of the Woman's Council of Realtors.  The industry promotes several occasions like this including Toys for Tots and the Children's Miracle Network and others.  Please know that I support these and other causes in my own way -- Who wouldn't?

HERE IS MY PROBLEM

The real estate industry sponsors these and other events but who knows how much brokers and agents  personally give?  AND, anyone who has followed me on social media or knows me personally also knows that I am an EXTREME critic of percentage based real estate commissions where sellers pay more and more as the selling price of a home goes up.  For instance, a $300,000 sellers pays double that of a $150,000 seller and a $450,000 seller pays an astounding triple at any given commission rate which are always negotiable.  (Although the overwhelming majority are 5% to 7%.

SO WHATS WITH THESE FUNDRAISERS?

Think of it.  All the industry has to do is donate the DISGRACEFUL EXCESS from a few transactions each year and these monetary needs are met.  Here is the unfortunate truth.

THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY HAS MASTERED THE ART OF CAPITALIZING ON THE UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCES OF OTHERS, GETTING THE PUBLIC TO PAY AND MAKING THEMSELVES LOOK LIKE THE HERO'S!

I just can't buy into it anymore.  I tried for a few years but my conscience scolded me.  So I'll continue being a good citizen in my own way.
Real estate agent friends.  Please don't make any comments unless you can explain what EXTRA services you provide for the EXTRA money sellers pay the example above.

  1. Dan, Although I respect you as a person, and your business model of a "For Sale By Owner" type business relation- I give you Kudos. I remember when Foxtons and YHD were the ever so popular companies out there. - Now we have that Help You Sell business motto- But I have to take offense to your criticism on the many realtor out there that go above and beyond is the fundraising for local causes.
I can not speak for other But I saw you mention the Children Miracle network- Which is RE/MAX the only real estate company who participates in that very worthy cause, That benefits our local Children who can not afford medical care- So here is a Brief history- Since 1992 to 2014 RE/MAX and it's agents have personally donated to date over 130 MILLION to this cause. Each agent in their own way Donates on every transaction, along with the community fundraising, I am attaching a link for you to view the LEGAL YEAR END REPORTS from The CMN- I thought I would also place a link up there for you to donate like you said in your own way. Now as far has my marketing and services. I am sure you know full well what they are- I do not charge a fee to place their home on the MLS and make my sellers do all the work. from showings, to negotiating to having the contracts faxed to their home, from the home inspections, to the lawyers and getting the C-O. Its not about Buying the Buyer by offering them 20% providing they MUST give me a video Its about SERVICE and repeat clients. Yes, real Estate appears to look like we make a fortune, But I have on many occasions worked for FREE. its building a relationship that is NOT just during the contract. It's after and beyond and hopefully generational. So although you feel the need to put down your fellow realtors. I still think you looked great in a Bra- see below if you would like the facts on The Children Miracle network and What we Do for our Local Families in need
